Power Washing: Choose the Scope Around the Surface

Plan exterior cleaning around material condition, suitable methods, protection and the difference between dirt and damage.

Identify what you want cleaned

A house exterior can include siding, masonry, wood, composite surfaces and painted details, each with its own condition and care needs. List the areas you want reviewed instead of describing the entire project only as pressure washing. Take photos showing staining, surface wear and nearby openings. Explain whether the goal is routine cleaning or preparation for another finish. The appropriate method needs to follow the actual material and its condition; one approach should not be assumed suitable for every surface on the property. Check whether earlier maintenance records identify special finishes or surface treatments. That information can be more useful for planning than describing the exterior simply as dirty or weathered.

Separate soiling from material failure

A dark patch, peeling coating or discolored board may reflect more than ordinary dirt. Mention persistent dampness, earlier leaks or recurring staining. Cleaning can change appearance without correcting deterioration or a water-related problem. Ask which areas need repair assessment before cleaning is planned. Our roofing and exterior service can help discuss those surrounding concerns. Do not scrape, climb or experiment with high-pressure equipment to determine what a surface can tolerate; the project should establish appropriate methods before work begins.

Discuss a surface-specific cleaning plan

Ask how the selected method accounts for existing finishes, joints, openings and manufacturer care guidance where available. Delicate or deteriorated areas may limit the available approach. Clarify whether the project includes a test area where appropriate and how expectations will be discussed before treating the full surface. Some staining may not be fully removable without affecting the material, so the desired result needs realistic boundaries. If cleaning precedes painting or staining, coordinate preparation and readiness requirements with the product and finishing plan.

Protect the property and daily access

Identify nearby landscaping, outdoor belongings, electrical equipment and openings that need attention in the protection plan. Explain where water can collect and which paths the household uses. Ask who will move furniture, planters and other items before work. Keep pets and children away from the active area according to the agreed instructions. Related deck or fence work may need coordination if cleaning reveals damaged material or forms part of a larger maintenance project. Clear boundaries help keep access and finish responsibilities understandable.

Request cleaning with enough context

Provide photos, known surface materials and information about previous coatings or repairs. Identify each area to be included and the result you hope to achieve. Ask the scope to explain preparation, cleaning boundaries, protection and exclusions arising from surface condition. Confirm whether repairs or follow-up finishing will be discussed separately.
